Power Yoga!

What is Power Yoga? It is a fun, fitness-based athletic style of yoga that will leave you sweaty, strong, flexible, and focused. Every class is different, but the foundation to Power Yoga is the Vinyasa - the Sun Salutation. Similar to Ashtanga Yoga, this vigorous style of yoga focuses on linking each movement with each breath.

You have probably seen a basic Sun Salutation: lift arms overhead, fold forward toward the earth, step or jump back to plank, lower down to a low push-up, lift into Upward Facing Dog, and then push back to Downward Facing Dog. Set to great music each week, we weave other yoga poses between the Sun Salutations in Power Yoga for creative, inspiring, refreshing classes.

Modifications will be offered to fit the needs of individual students, so give it a try! This class will be challenging, and it will be a great cross-training tool. This class will be difficult for those with serious wrist or shoulder issues, as we spend a considerable amount of time supporting ourselves in Downward Facing Dog or similar postures.

Power Yoga can help improve endurance, strength and flexibility. It can help bring better posture, better circulation, and better focus. Many participants even say it helps prevent injuries and improves overall confidence and conditioning.

Here is one of millions of links to great yoga sites giving examples of Sun Salutations and related poses. http://www.yogasite.com/sunsalute.htm

Our Downtown YMCA will be offering Power Yoga with Kim on Saturdays at 11am and Tuesdays at 4:30 pm when our new schedule begins October 4th. Everyone is welcome; come and do what you can, and each week do a little bit more! Also spread the word about our new Beginners' Yoga Saturdays at 10am.
